So, when I need to clear my head I love to take a long drive. The other day was a good day to head out. For years I’ve wanted to do it… Just like the REM song… Hummin’ …. All the way to Reno.
Reno is in Nevada. That drive is a great idea! Well, nice thought: Reno is RIGHT next to the California border and more than 600 miles from Salt Lake City. Consequently: I was humming HALF WAY to Reno.
So, what do you find humming halfway to Reno? It’s BEAUTIFUL out there! In many places, the freeway glides through a shallow glass pool that is the remnant of the Great Salt Lake. It’s so still and pristine. The mountains and hills and desert reflect into it in a way that’s almost as surreal as surreal as looking out over the hills of Tuscany. But, it’s a LOT closer to home.
It happened to be that time of day where you get that golden glow of “almost sunset”. Everything looks soft, warm, and beautiful. What I’d expected to be a fast, furious, and probably ugly drive was actually beautiful, serene, and well — still really, really fast because that’s my jam.
We never know what’s ahead of us, but sometimes even before it’s defined we can see it will be beautiful, surprising, and if we choose it: it will check something off a list we’ve had running in the back of our head.
